Rest in Peace, Peter Schimke

We're very saddened to hear of the recent passing of pianist Peter Schimke on February 23, 2020. He was a fantastic genre-defying musician known and loved by so many folks. So many wonderful nights of fantastic music at the AQ were driven by his piano playing. He will be missed.

KBEM-FM Jazz 88 has posted a tribute to Peter here.

Here's his obituary from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Here's the song "Gorilla" from the 2004 "How Birds Work" album, featuring Peter on piano and vocals.

About the Artists' Quarter

The Artists' Quarter was a musician owned and operated jazz club, a Twin Cities institution that first opened in Minneapolis in 1977.

The second incarnation of the club was opened in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1995, initially located in the lower level of the McColl (now Brooks) Building adjacent to St. Paul's Galtier (now Cray) Plaza at 366 Jackson Street. It moved to the lower level of the Hamm Building at 7th Place and St. Peter in 2001.

Artists' Quarter: Pleased and Flipped

Over on her website bebopified, our friend, writer and arts columnist Pamela Espeland has expertly collected recollections from many musicians and fans of the Artists' Quarter. Shared were many fond memories and feelings about what it was like to be a part of the AQ experience, either on stage or in the audience.
