Phil Hey

Number 45 of 76 on the AQ's 'Great Day in St. Paul' poster.

Back in the mid-late 70s I used to lived in a big collective house on the 2400 block of Lyndale with Phil and his then girlfriend, later to be wife Judy, and an assortment of friends and family. Phil was already a well-established jazz artist at that time and he used the huge 2 story attic of this enormous house sometimes as a rehearsal space. It was freezing up there during the winter your breath would form huge cumulus clouds but the music was so hot. At that time he was playing with Anthony Cox and Pat Moriarity among others. It was such a creative and formative period for Minneapolis music on both fronts of Jazz and Rock. I remember some of Phil's gigs on the West Bank, at the Extempore I think, completely explosive! I kind of lost track of Phil and Judy as I moved to New York in 1980 with the band I was playing with at the time, NNB. I remember Phil as truly one of the nicest guys I have ever met in my life. Here's a link to a few more pics that I found of Phil on the net.
