Chet Baker’s signature sound on trumpet and vocals allowed him to “own” standards that have been performed by countless musicians. Tunes like “My Funny Valentine” and “Time After Time” simply took on new meaning in the hands of Chet Baker. His patient and cool West Coast sound perhaps belied a tumultuous and troubled life that ended in 1988 at the age of 58. Chet’s early years saw him playing with greats including Stan Getz, Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan, a fact that is often lost in the iconic story of Baker’s solo career. Steve Kenny, a Twin Cities trumpeter with a penchant for nuance that is ideally suited for a tribute to Chet, leads this intriguing date.
