Saturday, December 6, Larry Coryell Trio (8:00 pm & 10:30 pm, $25)
Saturday, 06 December 2008
ImageLarry Coryell, one of the most influential guitarists in jazz and jazz/rock fusion, is making his Artists' Quarter debut. Coryell will be joined by drumming great Alphonse Mouzon (of Weather Report, McCoy Tyner, Coryell’s The Eleventh House and other fame) and Joe Bagg on B-3 organ.  Reservations are recommended. Larry Coryell has recorded more than 75 albums over the past 40 years as a bandleader, soloist and 'featured accompanist'. Hailed by his legion of fans as one of "the guitar gods" in the late 1970s and as a "truly Renaissance musician who excels at all styles of playing", he has also been christened as "a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion" by the New York Times, and dubbed "the Godfather of Fusion" by Dan Ouellette of DownBeat magazine.  When he hit the New York jazz scene in the mid-1960s, Coryell brought a jazz style infused with blues and rock that changed the way people thought about jazz guitar. A definitively complete player, he went on to do brilliant work in bebop, acoustic and classical music as well.  As a bandleader he has released several classic records.  His membership in cutting edge groups, including The Eleventh House (also featuring Randy Brecker), has also been deeply influential.  The musicians with whom Coryell has recorded forms a staggering list that includes Herbie Mann, John McLaughlin, Stephane Grappelli, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus and many more.
