Innovative trumpeter and composer Kelly Rossum releases his third CD, Family, featuring his own sharp originals, stellar contributions from Bryan Nichols and Chris Bates, and three covers “given the unique Minneapolis Treatment” (to quote Kelly, his own self). The eclectic platter swings, darts, soothes and batters with equal élan. The innovative and thoroughly modern gestalt that is Kelly Rossum is complemented in a familial way by pianist Nichols, bassist Bates and drummer/brother J.T. Bates.
