Friday, June 13 - Saturday, June 14, Brian Grivna Quintet, Tribute to Cannonball Adderley(9 pm $10) |
|
Thursday, 12 June 2008 |
Brian Grivna is one of Minnesota’s most accomplished (and most spellbinding) saxophone players. It is a bona fide treat to catch one of his infrequent club gigs, much less to hear him pay tribute to the great Julian “Cannonball” Adderley. Grivna hit the jazz road in a serious way after earning his degree in English literature at Dartmouth College. He joined the Buddy Rich band in 1971, touring with the drumming great for almost two years and appearing on four RCA recordings and numerous television shows. From there he joined the Guthrie Theatre for a decade as a staff woodwind performer. As a freelancer, Brian has recorded and toured with the Minnesota Orchestra, the SPCO, vocalist Bobby McFerrin and many others. A charismatic pro with an exuberant sound, his touch is the right one for Cannonball Adderley’s joyous alto sax style. A member of Miles Davis’s sextet that included John Coltrane, Adderley can be heard on classics like Milestones and Kind of Blue. Leading his own group, Adderley saw great commercial and critical success, including the hit “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” composed by Adderley’s piano player Joe Zawinul. This promises to be a tribute to remember.
