ianist Tony Hymas, bassist Bruno Chevillon, and drummer JT Bates have all worked in this configuration with a multitude of renowned musicians, including the accomplished French multi-instrumentalist Michel Portal. Hymas, Chevillon, and Bates have often played together in his bands. Hymas and Bates are heard on the award-winning Portal CD “Birdwatcher,” and Chevillon has been a regular in Portal’s bands since the eighties. Their trio performed for the first time at l’Ermitage in Paris last November. Each brought his deep personal touch to the trio, and their collective sonic explorations revealed beautiful melodies, ineradicable swing, and creative improvisation.
