Friday, March 21 - Saturday, March 22, Carole Martin with Gary Berg (9 pm, $10)
Thursday, 20 March 2008

Together again, as on the critially acclaimed CD Pieces of Dreams, Gary Berg will bring his saxes and chromatic harmonica to this gig as the perfect compliment to Carole's singing.

ImageDescribing the sublime Ms. Martin in a Star Tribune profile, Michael Anthony set this scene:  “Playing to a packed house and dressed in an elegant velvet pantsuit with a gold lamé vest, she was doing tunes from her latest CD Songs From My Heart.  Among them was a sexy, hard-swinging 'I Concentrate on You' propelled by her rich, resonant alto and unerring rhythmic sense.”  Songs From My Heart was released in late 2005, one year following her 2004 comeback CD Pieces of Dreams (her first recording since the late 1960s and another critics' favorite).  Her touchingly honest and emotional vocals, and undeniable charisma, hit home with multiple generations.  Check out this video of Carole from last summer.

ImageGary Berg is well known to AQ fans as a soulful and hard bopping horn man, Gary is also known to take a moving turn on the chromatic harmonica.  Mr. Berg can also be heard playing on a slew of current local recordings including Pieces of Dreams by Carole Maritn, This is Organ Night by Billy Holloman, Blanket of Blue by Paula Lammers, Deja Vu by Francine Roche, and The Highest Mountain by George Avaloz.   Jonathan Francis of The MAC Weekly states:"... Gary Bergs solos are masterpieces of wit and charm, bop-driven and infused with soul ... Charlie Parker meets old school rhythm-and-blues meets 60's hard bop."  Check out this video of Gary .
