Friday, February 22 - Saturday, February 23, Kelly Rossum Quartet (9 pm, $10) |
|
Trumpet innovator, educator and band leader Kelly Rossum shines once again on his latest CD, Line. Jazz Improv Magazine accurately reports that “Rossum is gifted to a philosophical level of musical understanding.” Rossum has traveled to Bangkok, performing with Russian and Thai free-jazzers to bring his vision to new audiences. This weekend he’s in the exotic St. Paul basement with Bryan Nichols (piano) and those dashing brothers featured in Mpls./St. Paul magazine, Chris Bates (bass) and JT Bates (drums). Rossum combines swing, bop and free jazz with electronica, ambient and trance – “his own sound” is an overused proclamation, but it actually applies to Rossum.
"Rossum’s trumpet ventures forth with scalar fragments, commenting on his own comments, and with a free voice not necessarily sounding like anybody. ... Rossum is the most consistently his own man." - Grego Applegate Edwards, Cadence Magazine www.cadencebuilding.com
