Monday, February 4, Green (7 pm)/Poetry SLAM with special guest Shá Cage (8 pm, $5) |
Green is a burning post-bop quartet featuring Zack Lozier on trumpet, Rob Dewey on piano, Rich Casey on bass, and Scotty Schultz on drums. February special guest is Shá Cage. One of the most dynamic spoken word artists on the scene, and a noted actress, Shá Cage has been appropriately called 'The Priestess of the Word.' A striking mix of spoken word and theatre, her performances have left audiences moved. Her work unabashedly questions inequality, class, and gender issues and is rooted in the rhythms of her native Natchez, Mississippi. Her Film credits include: Midnight, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Joe Somebody, Factotum, and Cry About a Nickel. Visit www.myspace.com/shacage for samples of her work.
February's Side event: The "Naughty Or Nice Haiku Battle" February is the time of love - and nookie. So Our infamous dirty haiku battle comes back with a twist. Instead of being just plain filthy, poets now have a choice to perform haiku that are sweet, mushy and romantic - or sexy, kinky and hot. Which will win? The Slam competition is open to anyone (18+) three rounds of poetic battle and good times. Sign up between 7 and 8 pm.
Up to ten poets perform in a randomly selected order. Five judges, randomly selected from the audience, score each poem (based on writing and performance) from 0.0 to 10.0. The highest scoring poets move on to the next round/s. The 1st – 3rd place winners win cash prizes. The rules are as follows: * Each poem must be of the poet's own construction; * Each poet gets three minutes (plus a ten-second grace period) to read one poem, if the poet goes over, points will be deducted from the total score; * The poet may not use props, costumes, or musical instruments; * Of the scores the poet received from the five judges, the high and low scores are dropped, and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 0-30. Poetry Slam was started in 1986 by a Chicago construction worker named Mark Smith. Slam has grown steadily and is now a worldwide phenomenon, with major Slams occurring in hundreds of venues on five continents. Slam has been the subject of numerous documentaries and movies, spawned HBO’s ‘Def Poetry Jam’ and is responsible for starting the careers of such stars as Sage Francis, Saul Williams, Desdamona and many more. |
