Benefit for John Clegg Saxophonist, noted educator, great friend of the AQ, and nice-guy-supreme John Clegg is facing a serious medical situation. JC’s devotion to passing music on to kids is just one of his many virtues. This is a musical celebration featuring many of JC’s musician pals to show support and help ease the burden. Even if you don’t know JC, he’s one of those folks who make a place like the AQ special. Please join us.
1st band the Phil Hey Quartet. The PHQ features Dave Hagedorn on vibes, Phil Aaron on piano, Tom Lewis on bass and Phil on drums and has been an Artists' Quarter favorite for the past 6 years. No surprise really. This is a no-nonsense, uncompromising band of local jazz greats regularly performing the tunes of Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Hutcherson, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter and others.
2nd Band the Dave Karr Quartet. For over 50 years, saxophonist/ flutist/ clarinetist/ composer Dave Karr has been performing with many of the best national and Twin Cities jazz artists. Growing up in New York City, Karr took in some of the great jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and from that he got the bug. Karr moved to the Twin Cities in his twenties, and has long established himself as one of the best-loved players (and characters) in the local jazz scene.
3rd Band the Jon Pemberton Quintet. Jon Pemberton has enjoyed an eclectic career, including performing with Skatet, a 7-piece traditional ska band with heavy heavy jazz influences, and playing trumpet for the Paul Renz Quintet, Shangoya, and George Avaloz. Pemberton is also dedicated to private teaching (tuba!) through the Hopkins School District; and leads his own band, the Pembertones, in addition to his quintet. . - (Andrea Canter, Jazz Police) 4th band Century College Big Band! and more surprises!
