Monday, October 1, Green (7 pm)/Poetry SLAM with special guest Ed Mabrey (8 pm, $5) |
|
Green is a burning post-bop quartet featuring Zack Lozier on trumpet, Rob Dewey on piano, Rich Casey on bass, and Scotty Schultz on drums. S oap Boxing Poetry Slam with Special guest feature from Austin, TX: BIG POPPA E. BIG POPPA E is one of the hottest, most powerful performance poets touring the country today. BPE’s pyrotechnic blend of dynamic performance poetry, hilarious stand-up comedy, and blistering dramatic monologue has thrilled standing-room-only audiences in universities nationwide. His deft skewering of pop culture has led to two stints on HBO’s award winning “Def Poetry” series and appearances on BET’s comedy/variety series “The Way We Do It,” CBS’s “60 Minutes,” National Public Radio, and the Voice of America network in Europe. A poetry slam veteran with 10 years of experience, Big Poppa E is a National Poetry Slam Champion with more than 50 headlining university performances and 130+ poetry slam features under his belt since 2000. BPE has performed poetry in nearly every state in the United States and is widely-known for giving thoroughly inspiring poetry workshops that are as engaging and enlightening as they are entertaining. Poetry is not meant to be caged in a dusty textbook and saved for special occasions or class assignments: Poetry is how we make sense of the world and share our profoundly human experiences with each other. Whether it’s verse scratched in a dog-eared notebook or hip-hop lyrics spit in a cypher, it’s all poetry, and the purpose of slam is to empower everyone to share their words with the world and have a ton of fun while doing it. Poetry is life, and to simply live is poetry.
Side Event: "Nice Guy MC Battle"
Anyone can compete. Two by two – real and/or wannabe MCs go toe to toe to see who can out ‘rap’ the other, but there's a catch (there's always a catch with me) They can only say nice and positive things. No insults, only compliments, and it can't be about, "I'm so good, I'm a really dope MC" Nope, it has to be about the other MC.
So... Boys and girls... break out your beats and start practicing your best sweet nothings and lollipop 'lift-ups' cuz we're all about the love in November. |
