Friday, July 6- Saturday, July 7, Kenny Horst Quartet (9 pm, $10) |
Drummer and composer Kenny Horst articulates his expressive musical accents in the hard bop setting, soul-jazz (The Tuesday Night Band), fusion (How Birds Work), standards (Irv Williams Quartet) and jazz-chamber music (The Five). If you go deeper into his past, you’ll even find tours with the Harlem Review and Al Hirt. As proprietor of the AQ, Kenny is requested to play the drums with many jazz legends who pass through town, including maestros like Mose Allison and Lew Tabackin. Oddly enough, since he books the club, Kenny Horst-as-headliner at the AQ is an extremely rare event. Then again, given Kenny’s modest demeanor, perhaps it’s not odd at all. Kenny will be joined by part of his legion of talented friends on this gig (peruvian guitarist Andres Prado, reed-man Pete Whitman and Kevin Clements on bass) – and will probably push the spotlight straight in their direction.
