Friday, November 30 - Satruday December 1, Maud Hixson / Rick Carlson CD release (9 pm, $10)
Friday, 30 November 2007

Image ImageThe gorgeous standard Stardust ponders a love that is far away in time and place, yet remains close to the heart, embodied by song.  “My stardust melody, the memory of love’s refrain.”  To some people, songs are so important that they can’t be separated from the rest of life.  Maud Hixson, it would seem, is one of those people.  Her rich and reverent vocal delivery is so natural and well-informed, and her utter lack of gimmickry is so tasteful, that “real life” rings out in every song – from blissful to melancholy.  On her CD being released at the AQ, Love’s Refrain, Maud is accompanied by the equally-tasteful, and emotionally tuneful, Rick Carlson on piano.  Just the two of them, and a satchel full of great songs like “Lucky To Be Me,” “Meet Me at No Special Place,” “Lotus Blossom,” and, of course, “Stardust.”  It’s an intimate and moving affair that promises to make for a touching live experience.

Thursday, November 29, Pete Whitman’s X-Tet (9 pm, $6)
Thursday, 29 November 2007
ImageFriday, October 19 - Saturday, October 20, Pete Whitman’s X-Tet (9 pm, $12) Saxophone maestro Pete Whitman gathers nine of his most talented friends for a monthly Thursday performance at the AQ.  This month, the “little big band” moves in for a weekend of dazzling charts and musical telepathy.  Even with ten members performing, you find yourself pondering where all those perfectly-placed, sonorous pearls are coming from.  When you review the roster of first-call pros on stand, you answer your own question.  Their 2002 release Where’s When? received a 4-star salute from Downbeat.  The all-star cast includes Laura Caviani on piano, Phil Hey on drums, Dave Hagedorn on vibes, a horn section roll call of Greg Keel, Clay Pufahl & Pete Whitman (saxes), Kelly Rossum & Adam Rosmiller (trumpets), and Jeff Rinear (trombone).

Wednesday, November 28 Lucia Newell Quartet (9 pm, $5)
Wednesday, 28 November 2007
ImageImageJazz vocalist Lucia Newell leads her top-notch quartet (which includes pianist Phil Aaron, bassist Gordy Johnson and drummer Kenny Horst) through an enchanted evening of soulful sambas, scat and Strayhorn. An AQ favorite, Lucia Newell is a vocalist of extraordinary ability and musical depth, truly a jazz musician. Check out this video clip.

“As reader or singer, Lucia Newell is a magnificent interpreter who communicates through intonation, phrasing, faultless diction (in two languages) and a husky contralto... Lucia turns her heart inside out, filling the air with the emptiness and despair the lyrics demand.” - Andrea Canter, Jazz Police
