Friday, August 31 - Saturday September 1, Happy Apple CD Release (9 pm, $12)
Friday, 31 August 2007

ImageThe highly anticipated release of Happy Apple’s new CD Back on Top (Sunnyside Records) finds the lads, well, back on top.  Not that they ever abandoned that post.  Entering the second decade of their melodic-yet-quixotic (in a good way) musical journey, the Apples weld rock dynamics and aural humor to their space probe of inter-stellar jazz grooves.  Join Dave King (drums), Erik Fratzke (bass) and Michael Lewis (sax) in celebration of the launch of their latest sonic missive.

Thursday, August 30, How Birds Work (9 pm, $4)
Thursday, 30 August 2007
ImageImageFiery chops, instinctual communal listening skills, sprawling musical vocabulary, dynamics in flight -- that's How Birds Work. On their CD "Live at the Artists' Quarter," HBW go from hard bop explorations to fusion-istic workouts to elegant melodicism on tracks like Coltrane's "Equinox," Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," and Peter Schimke's moving original "Vow." A recent Mpls/St. Paul magazine feature article described the sound as "swinging with lovely aggression -- and never swirling among the musicians for their own benefit, but constantly heading straight toward audience." Dean Granros (guitar), Peter Schimke (keyboards), Chris Bates (bass), Kenny Horst (drums).

Wednesday, August 29, Lucia Newell (9 pm, $4)
Wednesday, 29 August 2007
ImageJazz vocalist Lucia Newell leads her top-notch quartet (which includes pianist Phil Aaron, bassist Gordy Johnson and drummer Kenny Horst) through an enchanted evening of soulful sambas, scat and Strayhorn. An AQ favorite, Lucia Newell is a vocalist of extraordinary ability and musical depth, truly a jazz musician. Check out this video clip .

“As reader or singer, Lucia Newell is a magnificent interpreter who communicates through intonation, phrasing, faultless diction (in two languages) and a husky contralto... Lucia turns her heart inside out, filling the air with the emptiness and despair the lyrics demand.” - Andrea Canter, Jazz Police
