Thursday, May 31, Pete Whitman’s X-Tet (9 pm, $6)
ImageSaxophone maestro Pete Whitman gathers nine of his most talented friends for a monthly Thursday performance at the AQ. Their 2002 Artegra release Where's When? received a four-star salute from Downbeat magazine. The all-star cast includes Laura Caviani on piano, the rhythm axis of Gordy Johnson (bass) and Phil Hey (drums), Dave Hagedorn on vibes, and a horn section roll call of Dave Karr, Dave Milne & Pete Whitman (saxes), Steve Wagner & Dave Jensen (trumpets), and Jeff Rinear (trombone).

Wednesday, May 30, Anthony Cox, Phil Hey and Chris Lomheim (9 pm, $4)
ImageIn  New York, Bassist Anthony Cox developed an international reputation. His resume includes stints with Joe Lovano, Stan Getz, Steve Lacy and Ed Blackwell, as well as recordings with Dewey Redman, Sam Rivers, Geri Allen, Arthur Blythe, and Uri Caine, among others.  Since returning to the Twin Cities, he has shared the stage with his own ensembles (including  Carnatic Energy,) and in the company of such heavy hitters as Dave King, the Grismore Scea Group and more. Drummer Phil Hey is a hard bop beat keeper with the power of a prizefighter, in that elegant Ali style that incorporates grace and cunning. Named "Best Jazz Artist" of 2006 by City Pages, Phil was raised in the jazz drumming factory that is Philadelphia. His road work with the likes of Jay McShann, Dewey Redman and Benny Golson says a lot about the esteem he has gathered. Pianist Chris Lomheim was a member of The Illicit Sextet, and his own trio gigs (including the recording The Bridge) demonstrate a monster imagination and talented intensity that make him one of a kind.

Friday, May 25 - Sunday, May 27, Eric Alexander Group (9 pm Friday and Saturday, 8 pm Sunday, $15)

Eric AlexanderHard bop tenor sax player Eric Alexander, named 2003 artist of the year by JazzWeek, has garnered a large following with his warm, finely burnished tone and a robust melodic and harmonic imagination.  Eric himself has lost track of the number of recordings that feature his tenor magic as a sideman – but the number is well North of 70.  It's his role as bandleader, however, that has fans and musicians effusing about an under-40 artist who has established his own voice on the horn and become one of the brightest stars in jazz today.  His recent CD release on HighNote is called It's All in the Game.  Owen McNally of the Hartford Courant says “you immediately hear what makes Alexander the conqueror of mellow ballads and smoking up-tempo fare.  His strong sense of swing comes shining through right from the opening track....”  Eric is equally bold on standards, Monk workouts, original bop and Latin jazz.  His employers have included Mel Rhyne, Jimmy Scott, Jimmy McGriff, Charles Earland, Pat Martino, Freddy Cole . . . you get the idea.
