George Avaloz grew up on St. Paul's West Side, where his entertainment career began as a young Mexican hat dancer at various community celebrations. But drumming is how this hip performer has made his mark in show business, playing with such greats as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Quincy Jones, and a ten-year tour of duty with Billy Eckstine. On his last CD The Highest Mountain, Avaloz proved once again why he ranks among the best timekeepers and musical interpreters of the glory years of bebop and ballad jazz.

An free opening set at 7 p.m. features the Tesfa Combo and an open jam session. The Tesfa Combo features Dejen Tesfagiorgis on Saxophones, Steve Kenny on Trumpet, David Feily on Guitar/Trumpet, Jesse Mueller on Piano, Adam Tucker on Bass, and Aaron Rupar/Scorry Horey on Drums.

Celebrate Mardi Gras at the Artists' Quarter!

Sample some 'organic cookin' with the Tuesday Night Band. Hammond B-3 organ lovers have been flocking to the AQ on Tuesday nights for over a decade to get a soulful dose of funky jazz. The Tuesday Night Band features "Downtown" Bill Brown (Hammond B-3), Billy Franze (guitar), and Kenny Horst (drums) + guests! Anything can happen - and frequently does. Pianist Bobby Peterson was not only a legendary figure in Twin Cities jazz, he was a mentor to many and is missed as much for his personal warmth as his incredible talent. Paying tribute to Bobby (February 16, 1950 – July 8, 2002) are some of the musicians who were touched by his genius. Bobby’s powerhouse, swinging style and crowd-thrilling improvisations earned him a long-term engagement with the Buddy Rich Orchestra starting at age 21. After returning to the Twin Cities, he was a regular performer at the AQ.
