Saturday, January 23, Illicit Sextet (9 pm, $10).
Friday, 22 January 2010

ImageThe Illicit Sextet first reunited at the AQ in July 2009 – they had pulled out of the scene for almost the entire 15 years since the release of their debut CD, Chapter One. ImageThe groove interruptus only lasted half-a-year this time around. Referred to as “the Cadillac of local jazz” by critic Jim Meyer, the group covered a lot of musical terrain in their day. ImageAll of the members wrote original material, and they were one of the few groups forgoing the standards at that time. Whether getting soulful, slamming some hard bop, or improvising their way to redemption, the Illicit Sextet provided a thrill that was nothing to be ashamed of. Well, the thrill is back. Steve Kenny (trumpet), Paul Harper (sax), David Roos (guitar), Chris Lomheim (piano), Tom Pieper (bass) and Nathan Norman (drums).

Friday, January 22, Jon Weber Trio (8 pm, $10).
Thursday, 21 January 2010

ImagePianist Jon Weber is a musician with flawless technique and boundless imagination. His brilliantly crafted spontaneous orchestrations and encyclopedic musical knowledge easily place him in the rarefied company of today’s elite jazz musicians. Jon has played all over the world from his home bases of Chicago and New York, and along the way has composed and arranged for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, jammed at the piano with Stevie Wonder, recorded a tribute to Jay Livingston and Ray Evans (at their request), and thrilled critics and audiences with his virtuosity. His 2004 CD Simple Complex received critical raves. A perennial favorite at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival, Jon pays a rare winter-time visit to one of his favorite jazz haunts.

Thursday, January 21, Dean Granros Trio (9 pm, $5)
Wednesday, 20 January 2010
ImageGuitarist Dean Granros is a musician of mind-bending skill.  Whether he's composing, putting his own esoteric spin on a Monk tune or redefining a standard, his expansive musical vision, daunting precision and colorful use of harmonics make him a one-of-a-kind artist. Image “Dean Granros is a musical Jekyll and Hyde, mild mannered when he takes the stage and settles into the groove but eventually he will play like a madman taking the music where no sane person would and then makes it beautiful when he gets there. With solid chops and a jazz sensibility, this player demonstrates mastery of his craft and the music. Granros blends the vocabulary of bebop, acid rock, and delta blues into a delightful and potent cocktail that may leave you shaken or stirred” said Don Berryman at jazzpolice.com .  From the New York band Curlew in the late 1970s to current projects like How Birds Work, Starry Eyed Lovelies and F*K*G, Dean is one of those guys who the best musicians love to work with, and he inspires each one of them.  Tom Lewis (bass) and Kenny Horst (drums) will be digging in with Dean.
