Friday, Sept 18 - Saturday, Sept 19, Tribute to Jack McDuff: Tuesday Night Band + PW (9 pm, $10).
Thursday, 17 September 2009

ImageTo say that Captain Jack McDuff was one of the most revered titans to ever call the Twin Cities music scene home is to sell the Hammond B-3 organ master short.  ImageTruth is, Brother Jack McDuff was such a commanding force in the entire world of jazz that he earned two solid and enduring nicknames. With a career spanning more than 40 years (the last 10 of which were based in the Twin Cities), McDuff was a bandleader who developed talents like George Benson and Red Holloway, a composer with a wickedly melodic sensibility and a penchant for bluesy soul, and a jazz organ pioneer who influenced every great who followed in his path (Joey DeFrancesco comes to mind). Image He released classic recordings on labels like Prestige (1961’s The Honeydripper hangs on the AQ’s back wall) and Atlantic.  ImageJack passed away in early 2001, and he has been dearly missed ever since.  Every member of the Tuesday Night Band had a close musical and personal connection to Jack, and their always emotional sound should have an extra dose of that McDuff magic.  ImageJack’s wife Kathy McDuff will be on hand to share in some memories with the band (including, no doubt, the story of how she and Jack met at the AQ).  The Tuesday Night Band, made up of McDuff friends, admirers and musical compatriots, features Bill Brown (B-3 organ), Kenny Horst (drums), Billy Franze (guitar) and special guest Pete Whitman (sax).

Thursday, September 17, Lomheim, Johnson & Hey Trio (9 pm, $5)
Wednesday, 16 September 2009

ImageThis exciting trio features Chris Lomheim on piano, Gordy Johnson on bass and Phil Hey on drums.

One of the most sensitive and expressive pianists in town,  Chris Lomheim was a founding member of The Illicit Sextet. His own trio gigs (including the recording The Bridge) demonstrate a monster imagination and talented intensity that make him one of a kind. Check out this video of Chris at the AQ . Image

Gordon Johnson toured extensively throughout the ‘70s & ‘80s with the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra, Chuck Mangione, Doc Severinsen, Roy Buchanan and the Paul Winter Consort. Back home in the Twin Cities in recent times, he has performed with many great jazz artists, including Joanne Brackeen, Rosemary Clooney, Herb Ellis, Curtis Fuller, Scott Hamilton, Slide Hampton, Sean Jones, Stacey Kent, Delfeayo Marsalis, Jay McShann, Maria Muldaur, Dewey Redman, Jim Rotondi, Diane Schuur, Ben Sidran, Toots Thielemans, plus many Minneapolis, St Paul musical artists from many genres.

ImageDrummer Phil Hey is a hard bop beat keeper with the power of a prizefighter, in that elegant Ali style that incorporates grace and cunning. Named "Best Jazz Artist" of 2006 by City Pages, Phil was raised in the jazz drumming factory that is Philadelphia. His road work with the likes of Jay McShann, Dewey Redman and Benny Golson says a lot about the esteem he has gathered.

Wednesday, September 16 ,Tesfa Qt (7 pm), Dean Granros Trio (9 pm, $5)

ImageGuitarist Dean Granros is a musician of mind-bending skill.  Whether he's composing, putting his own esoteric spin on a Monk tune or redefining a standard, his expansive musical vision, daunting precision and colorful use of harmonics make him a one-of-a-kind artist.  “Granros blends the vocabulary of bebop, acid rock, and delta blues into a delightful and potent cocktail that may leave you shaken and stirred,” said Don Berryman at jazzpolice.comImageFrom the New York band Curlew in the late 1970s to current projects like How Birds Work, Starry Eyed Lovelies and F*K*G, Dean is one of those guys who the best musicians love to work with, and he inspires each one of them.  Tom Lewis (bass) and Kenny Horst (drums) will be digging in with Dean.
