Friday, Oct 16 - Sunday, Oct 18, Mose Allison (8 & 10:30 Friday & Saturday, 7 & 9:30 Sunday, $20)
Thursday, 15 October 2009

ImageSouthern-born pianist, composer and vocalist Mose Allison is considered “The William Faulkner of Jazz.” Melding Delta blues with boogie woogie and bebop on the piano, laid-back vocal stylings and sometimes satirical, always heartfelt lyrics, Mose is in a category all his own. His devoted musician fans range from Pete Townshend (The Who covered Mose's “Young Man Blues”) to Van Morrison to Tom Waits.Image Diana Krall opens a recent CD with Mose's composition “Stop This World.” His recording career began in 1956 on the Prestige label, and he has continued to record top-quality work on major labels ever since. Mose has been the subject of a Rhino Records compilation, aptly titled Allison Wonderland, and a Sony Records box set. As if his music career isn't distinguished enough, Mose appeared as himself in the movie “The Score” with fellow thespians Marlon Brando and Robert DeNiro. This legendary man-of-song is the subject of a recent BBC documentary, Mose Allison: Ever Since I Stole the Blues.

For over 50 years, saxophonist/flutist/clarinetist/composer Dave Karr has been performing with many of the best national and Twin Cities jazz artists.  The NYC native grew up seeing the great jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and he got the bug.  ImageKarr moved to the Twin Cities in his twenties, and has long established himself as one of the best-loved characters in the jazz scene.  Whether he’s in the orchestra of a touring Broadway hit, providing flourishes to the shows of top Twin Cities singers, leading his Gerry Mulligan tribute band on baritone sax or fronting his own quartet, Karr is a standout.  “[Dave's] fluid style is both exciting and elegant,”  JazzPolice.com.
