Friday, September 19, Jazz For Peace Concert Featuring Rick DellaRatta (6:00 – 8:30 pm, $25 cover)
Image  Pianist, vocalist and composer Rick DellaRatta performed his first “Jazz for Peace” concert at the United Nations in September 2002, featuring a multi-national band.  The distinguished jazz musician has gone on to tour the world with “Jazz for Peace,” raising money and awareness for causes that promote a better world (including providing instruments to underprivileged youths).  For more information, visit www.jazzforpeace.org.

Friday, September 19 - Saturday, September 20, Dave Karr’s Mulligan Stew (9 pm, $10)

ImageGerry Mulligan was the giant of the baritone saxophone.  The big horn presents a big challenge in the areas of speed, dexterity and grace.  Mulligan was more than equal to the task, whether playing with Miles on Birth of the Cool or leading bands on his own compositions like “Bernie's Tune.” Image Saxophonist Dave Karr put together a group to recreate the Gerry Mulligan Quartet sound at a Twin Cities Jazz Society Jazz From J to Z concert at the AQ. Image. Thier tribute CD, Mulligan Stew – Cookin' at the Hot Summer Jazz Festival, features incredible Twin Cities musicians serving up . . . oh, forget the food metaphor, the CD is great.  Dave Karr (baritone sax) is not only brave enough to take on the Mulligan songbook, he has the fluid, lyrical chops to nail it.  With Dave Graf (trombone), Phil Hey (drums), Gary Raynor (bass).

Thursday, September 18, How Birds Work (9 pm, $5)
ImageThis flock of Twin Cities jazz stars consistently mesmerizes its audiences.  Doses of rock and funk can be found in the post-bop explorations, always with a sense of purpose and an intoxicating rhythmic force. Check out their CD Live at the Artists’ Quarter for standout tracks like Coltrane's “Equinox,” Wayne Shorter's “Footprints,” and Peter Schimke's moving original “Vow.”  Better yet, check them out live at the Artists’ Quarter – in person – to really feel How Birds Work.  ImageA profile in Mpls/St. Paul magazine, describing guitarist Dean Granros, enthused, “[H]e possesses an undeniable sense of gravitas.  He’s the performer most difficult, even for his bandmates, not to watch.”  ImageIndeed, Dean’s standing among his peers is tall, and all the best players love to perform with him.  The same can be said for each member of this magnificent crew.  City Pages recently had this to say about HBW’s residency at the AQ:  “[M]usic this simultaneously assured and expansive deserves a good home – and How Birds Work has found it.”  Kenny Horst (drums), Peter Schimke (piano), Chris Bates (bass) and Dean Granros (guitar). Wednesday, September 17, Pat Moriarty/Ellen Lease Quintet (9 pm, $5)

Formerly known as "the best un-recorded band out there", The Ellen Lease/Pat Moriarty Quintet has been developing their repertoire, and thrilling club and concert audiences in the Minneapolis area for more than a decade.  ImageAward-winning composers Ellen Lease and Pat Moriarty contribute strong, highly colored works to the bands repertoire. Lease and Moriarty have collaborated on many projects since the early 80’s.  Although comparisons to the musics of Steve Lacy, Charles Mingus, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago are well taken, this band definitely has its own sound and conception.Image

The band includes leaders Ellen Lease (piano) and Pat Moriarty (sax and other “aerophones”), trumpeter Kelly Rossum and bassist Chris Bates, and drummer Dave  Stanoch.

"Lease is an artist of subtlety and grace."  - Pamela Espeland, Bebopified
