The Artists' Quarter

For over 50 years, saxophonist/flutist/clarinetist/composer Dave Karr has been performing with many of the best national and Twin Cities jazz artists. The NYC native grew up seeing the great jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and he got the bug. Karr moved to the Twin Cities in his twenties, and has long established himself as one of the best-loved characters in the jazz scene. Whether he’s in the orchestra of a touring Broadway hit, providing flourishes to the shows of top Twin Cities singers, leading his Gerry Mulligan tribute band on baritone sax or fronting his own quartet, Karr is a standout. “[Dave's] fluid style is both exciting and elegant,” JazzPolice.com. Thursday, June 18, Gary Berg Quartet (9 pm, $5)

Gary Berg is well known to AQ fans as the master of the saxes. A soulful and hard bopping horn man, Gary is also known to take a moving turn on the chromatic harmonica. Mr. Berg can also be heard playing on a slew of current local recordings including Pieces of Dreams by Carole Maritn, This is Organ Night by Billy Holloman, Blanket of Blue by Paula Lammers, Deja Vu by Francine Roche, and The Highest Mountain by George Avaloz. Jonathan Francis of The MAC Weekly states:"... Gary Bergs solos are masterpieces of wit and charm, bop-driven and infused with soul ... Charlie Parker meets old school rhythm-and-blues meets 60's hard bop." Come hear Gary as he leads his quartet through the musical landscape of bebop, hard bop, and soul-jazz. Tuesday, June 17, SWMT&M (7 pm)/ The Tuesday Night Band (9 pm, $5)

The Artists' Quarter's hottest night opens with an exciting band featuring Zach W. Schmidt, Cory J. Wong, Cassie Meyer, Patricio Toledo and Dan M. Musselman starting at 7:00 P.M. These young, talented musicians provide the perfect prelude to the AQ's longest standing engagement. Check out the video

Then, for the main event sample some 'organic cookin' with the Tuesday Night Band. Hammond B-3 organ lovers have been flocking to the AQ on Tuesday nights for over a decade to get a soulful dose of funky jazz. The Tuesday Night Band features "Downtown" Bill Brown (Hammond B-3), Billy Franze (guitar), and Kenny Horst (drums) + guests! Anything can happen - and frequently does. Monday, June 16, Green (7:30 pm)/Open Poetry (9 pm)

Green, featuring Rob Dewey on piano, Rich Casey on bass and Spencer McGinnis on drums, has been holding down early Monday nights at the AQ for over five years.

Open mic is really open. Come do your thing - read your poetry, sing, tell jokes whatever. Your 15 minutes of fame awaits. No cover charge.

Sunday, June 15, Available for Private Events

The Artists' Quarter is a great place to hold your company or personal party. It is perfect for groups of up to 150 people who want a state of the art sound system, concert grand piano, amplifiers, PA system and more.
