Thursday, March 20, Dave Karr Quartet (9 pm, $5)
Wednesday, 19 March 2008

ImageFor over 50 years, saxophonist/flutist/clarinetist/composer Dave Karr has been performing with many of the best national and Twin Cities jazz artists.  The NYC native grew up seeing the great jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and he got the bug.  Karr moved to the Twin Cities in his twenties, and has long established himself as one of the best-loved characters in the jazz scene.  Whether he’s in the orchestra of a touring Broadway hit, providing flourishes to the shows of top Twin Cities singers, leading his Gerry Mulligan tribute band on baritone sax or fronting his own quartet, Karr is a standout.  “[Dave's] fluid style is both exciting and elegant,”  JazzPolice.com.

ImageThen, for the main event sample some 'organic cookin' with the Tuesday Night Band. Hammond B-3 organ lovers have been flocking to the AQ on Tuesday nights for over a decade to get a soulful dose of funky jazz.   ImageThe Tuesday Night Band features "Downtown" Bill Brown (Hammond B-3), Billy Franze (guitar), and Kenny Horst (drums) + guests!  Anything can happen - and frequently does.  Check out these videos: Two tunes from the TNB  or  TNB "Shotgun"  - then come on down and join the fun. It's nothing but a party every Tuesday night. There's no stopping the groove.

Friday, March14 - Saturday, March15, Javier Santiago / Chris Smith Quartet (9pm, $10)
Thursday, 13 March 2008

ImageImageThe Brubeck Institute, part of the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA, honors its alumni Dave and Iola Brubeck.  Each year the school awards five scholarships to outstanding jazz musicians who are new high school grads.  This extremely competitive honor yields a batch of ferocious young lions.  The fact that two Twin Citians – Javier Santiago (piano) and Chris Smith (bass) – are among the scholarship winners is a tribute to their talents and to Minnesota’s youth jazz programs.  ImageThey will be joined by Ben Flocks (sax) and Cory Cox (drums).  Together they make up four-fifths of the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet, which performs at premier events (like the Monterey Jazz Festival) and top venues around the country.  The Artists’ Quarter is thrilled to welcome Chris and Javier to the stage as they continue their rise among the ranks of the elite young musicians in jazz.
