Tuesday, February 19, SWM&M (7pm)/ The Tuesday Night Band w/ special guest Debbie Duncan (9 pm, $5)
Monday, 18 February 2008

ImageThe Artists' Quarter's hottest night opens with an exciting band featuring Zach W. Schmidt, Cory J. Wong, Cassie Meyer, and Dan M. Musselman starting at 7:00 P.M. These young, talented musicians provide the perfect prelude to the AQ's longest standing engagement.

Image Hammond B-3 organ lovers have been flocking to the AQ on Tuesday nights for over a decade to get a soulful dose of funky jazz.   Special guest Debbie Duncan gets to the soul of the matter in every vocal performance.  She is a jazz singer, to be sure, but there is no mistaking the deep well of inspiration from Gospel, folk, blues, R&B and classical. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, Debbie has been one of the most revered figures in the vibrant Twin Cities music scene for over two decades. ImageThe Tuesday Night Band features "Downtown" Bill Brown (Hammond B-3), Billy Franze (guitar), and Kenny Horst (drums) + guests!  Anything can happen - and frequently does.  Check out these videos: Two tunes from the TNB  or  TNB "Shotgun"  - then come on down and join the fun. It's nothing but a party every Tuesday night. There's no stopping the groove.

Friday, February 15 – Saturday, February 16, Bobby Peterson Memmorial Piano Showcase (9 pm, $10)
Thursday, 14 February 2008

ImageImageImagePianist Bobby Peterson was not only a legendary figure in Twin Cities jazz, he was a mentor to many and is missed as much for his personal warmth as his incredible talent. Paying tribute to Bobby (born February 16, 1950) are some of the friends, fans and relatives who were touched by his genius. Bobby passed away on July 8, 2002 from a heart condition (a player until the end, he finished a gig and was packing up when he was stricken). Bobby’s powerhouse, swinging style and cro! wd-thrilling improvisations earned him a long-term engagement in the Buddy Rich Orchestra starting at age 21. After returning to the Twin Cities, he was a regular performer (and a fan favorite) at the AQ. Taking the piano bench to salute this musical giant over the weekend are Peter Schimke, Chris Lomheim, and Tanner Taylor,on Friday night and Laura Caviani, Phil Aaron, and Mikkel Romstad on Saturday.ImageImageImage

Thursday, February 14, Romantic Music - Maud Hixson and Rick Carlson (9 pm $5)
Wednesday, 13 February 2008
ImageImageThe gorgeous standard Stardust ponders a love that is far away in time and place, yet remains close to the heart, embodied by song.  “My stardust melody, the memory of love’s refrain.”  To some people, songs are so important that they can’t be separated from the rest of life.  Maud Hixson, it would seem, is one of those people.  Her rich and reverent vocal delivery is so natural and well-informed, and her utter lack of gimmickry is so tasteful, that “real life” rings out in every song – from blissful to melancholy.  As on her latest CD, Love’s Refrain, Maud is accompanied by the equally-tasteful, and emotionally tuneful, Rick Carlson on piano.  Just the two of them, and a satchel full of great romantic songs like “Lucky To Be Me,” “Lotus Blossom,” and, of course, “Stardust.”  It’s an intimate and moving affair that makes a touching live experience.
