Friday, August 17 - Saturday, August 18, Irv Williams Quartet: Birthday Celebration (9 pm, $10)
Friday, 17 August 2007

ImagePlay the age card.”  Irv Williams – providing marketing advice for sales of his CDs.  The truth is, no marketing gimmicks are required to sell tenor saxophonist Irv Williams’ CDs.  His latest, Duo with Peter Schimke, was listed #1 in Mpls/St. Paul Magazine’s Top Ten local releases for 2006.  Image  His previous two CDs, That’s All? (2004) and Dedicated to You (2005), also earned critical raves, extensive radio play, and kudos from Irv’s many fans.  If you think #88 is the year when he’ll slow down, think again.Irv is back in the studio, committing some more of his melodic magic to digital history.  Irv arrived in St. Paul with the Navy band in 1942, and he’s been a Twin Cities jazz icon ever since.  Friday is his actual birthday, but he’ll be playing the age card – and his incredible music – all weekend.

Thursday, August 16, Jeanne Arlan Peterson's Birthday (7 pm, $4)
Thursday, 16 August 2007
ImageImage“Age is just a number – and mine is unlisted.”  Jeanne Arland Peterson.
Sorry Jeanne, we have to make an exception on the occasion of your birthday.  A singer, pianist, and charmer nonpareil, Jeanne is the matriarch of Minnesota’s First Family of Music.  This amazing talent spent 22 years as a staff vocalist and pianist on WCCO, the Twin Cities largest radio station, all the while playing nightclubs and recording in studios.  Jeanne's career has many highlights, including performances with Bob Hope, Sonny Stitt and George Benson, just to name a few.  She was one of the first two women inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame (the other is Judy Garland).  Working (again) on her birthday, the list of younger musicians who can keep up with Jeanne is mostly populated by her offspring.
