Friday, May 18 - Satruday, May 19, Andrés Prado Quintet (9 pm, $10)
Friday, 18 May 2007

Andrés PradoPeru native Andrés Prado is a guitarist of exceptional skill.  The joy and emotion expressed through his music is something that can’t be taught – he is a special artist not to be missed.   Andrés has studied jazz and classical guitar at conservatories in Lima, Buenos Aires and at Trinity College of Music in London.  Andrés relocated to the Twin Cities in 2005, much to our benefit.  Mixing the styles of artists like Elvin Jones and Miles Davis with his repertoire of Andean and Amazon melodies and Afro-Peruvian rhythms, the sound is exhilarating.  He’s bringing a fresh approach to these shows, weaving the rhythms and sounds of Peruvian shamanic chants into his instrumental jazz oeuvre (possibly the only example of this sound out there).  His gifts as a bandleader are equally stellar, inspiring hypnotic interplay with his band of top-notch talents: Peter Schimke (piano), Pete Whitman (sax), Kevin Washington (drums), Anthony Cox (bass).

Thursday, May 17, Phil Hey Quartet (9 pm, $4)
Thursday, 17 May 2007

ImageMay 17th is the birthday of the late, great Dewey Redman (1931). Phil played and toured with Dewey for many years. The PHQ  will pay tribute to this great artist by playing a number of his tunes.

The Phil Hey Quartet features Dave Hagedorn on vibes, Phil Aaron on piano, Tom Lewis on bass and Phil on drums and has been an Artists' Quarter favorite for the past 6 years. No surprise really. This is a no-nonsense, uncompromising band of local jazz greats regularly performing the tunes of Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Hutcherson, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter and others. Over the years they have attracted a loyal following of hardcore jazz fans and students who show up on the monthly Thursday night when they perform.

Wednesday, May 16, How Birds Work (9 pm, $4)
Wednesday, 16 May 2007
ImageFiery chops, instinctual communal listening skills, sprawling musical vocabulary, dynamics in flight -- that's How Birds Work. On their CD "Live at the Artists' Quarter," HBW go from hard bop explorations to fusion-istic workouts to elegant melodicism on tracks like Coltrane's "Equinox," Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," and Peter Schimke's moving original "Vow." A recent Mpls/St. Paul magazine feature article described the sound as "swinging with lovely aggression -- and never swirling among the musicians for their own benefit, but constantly heading straight toward audience." Dean Granros (guitar), Peter Schimke (keyboards), Chris Bates (bass), Kenny Horst (drums).
