Peter Schinke is a world calss jazz pianist with plenty of musical ideas and the finely honed skills to express them expertly. We are lucky that he has chosen to live in the Twin Cities. Jazz Police says: "Peter is a player who who isn't afraid to push the music in new directions. When he is comping behind a soloist he is engaged in a subtle dialog, listening and responding with harmonies and rhythms that sometimes represent a suggestion to the soloist. He is a player who is never on 'autopilot' but is engaged and committed to the music he is participating in creating. No two takes will be the same. Either on piano or Fender Rhodes, Schimke is well worth seeking out."

Lucia Newell will be singing Brazilian music with Joan Griffith. They will bring out some of the oldies but goldies, and some of their newest arrangements, too. The last time they did this was a year ago at the AQ, so don’t miss this special evening with Laura Caviani on piano, Gary Gauger on drums, and bassist unknown at this point. Come out and hear samba, bossa nova, choro, baiao, frevo and more in music by Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Pixinginha, Edu Lobo, Baden Powell, and many others, including originals by Joan, Lucia and Laura.

Dean Magraw is more than a guitar virtuoso. His utter unity with the instrument creates a musical experience that emanates from the stage, but cascades over the room in sheets of rejuvenating spirit. Unseen Rain is the grinning shaman’s new release with collaborators Jim Anton (bass) and JT Bates (drums). Recorded live in the studio over a three-day period, it captures the magical combination of performance immediacy mixed with countless hours of ensemble building preceding the sessions. Magraw’s electric and acoustic mastery of stringed instruments and his penchant for world music sounds are wonderfully framed by the fluid sympathy of Anton’s bass and the expressive, talkative, percussion of Bates. Magraw’s many musical associations have included a long-time duo run with Peter Ostroushko, stints with Ruth McKenzie, Claudia Schmidt and Greg Brown, and an acclaimed 2006 recording with Chicago heavy hitter John Williams. Dean won the NAIRD 1994 Best Acoustic Instrumental Album of the Year for his solo debut, Broken Silence.
