Thursday, December 20, Phil Hey Quartet (9 pm, $5)
Wednesday, 19 December 2007
ImageImageThe Phil Hey Quartet features Dave Hagedorn on vibes, Phil Aaron on piano, Tom Lewis on bass and Phil on drums and has been an Artists' Quarter favorite for the past 6 years. No surprise really. This is a no-nonsense, uncompromising band of local jazz greats regularly performing the tunes of Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Hutcherson, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter and others. Over the years they have attracted a loyal following of hardcore jazz fans and students who show up on the monthly Thursday night when they perform.  Check out this video of the PHQ doing Don Cherry's Mopti or this one of the PHQ performing "I'm Old Fashioned" .

Wednesday, December 19, Dave Karr (9 pm, $5)
Tuesday, 18 December 2007
ImageFor over 50 years, saxophonist/flutist/clarinetist/composer Dave Karr has been performing with many of the best national and Twin Cities jazz artists.  The NYC native grew up seeing the great jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and he got the bug.  Karr moved to the Twin Cities in his twenties, and has long established himself as one of the best-loved characters in the jazz scene.  Whether he’s in the orchestra of a touring Broadway hit, providing flourishes to the shows of top Twin Cities singers, leading his Gerry Mulligan tribute band on baritone sax or fronting his own quartet, Karr is a standout.  “[Dave's] fluid style is both exciting and elegant,”  JazzPolice.com. Check out this video of Dave Karr performing "Zoot Walks In" at the Arists Quarter.
