Sunday, October 21, Benefit for John Clegg - 4 bands (7 pm, $10 suggested donation)
Sunday, 21 October 2007

Image  Benefit for John Clegg  Saxophonist, noted educator, great friend of the AQ, and nice-guy-supreme John Clegg is facing a serious medical situation.  JC’s devotion to passing music on to kids is just one of his many virtues.  This is a musical celebration featuring many of JC’s musician pals to show support and help ease the burden.  Even if you don’t know JC, he’s one of those folks who make a place like the AQ special.  Please join us.

Image1st band the Phil Hey Quartet. The PHQ features Dave Hagedorn on vibes, Phil Aaron on piano, Tom Lewis on bass and Phil on drums and has been an Artists' Quarter favorite for the past 6 years. No surprise really. This is a no-nonsense, uncompromising band of local jazz greats regularly performing the tunes of Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Hutcherson, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter and others.

Image2nd Band the Dave Karr Quartet. For over 50 years, saxophonist/ flutist/ clarinetist/ composer Dave Karr has been performing with many of the best national and Twin Cities jazz artists. Growing up in New York City, Karr took in some of the great jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and from that he got the bug. Karr moved to the Twin Cities in his twenties, and has long established himself as one of the best-loved players (and characters) in the local jazz scene.

3rd Band the Jon Pemberton Quintet. Jon Pemberton has enjoyed an eclectic career, including performing with Skatet, a 7-piece traditional ska band with heavy heavy jazz influences, and playing trumpet for the Paul Renz Quintet, Shangoya, and George Avaloz. Pemberton is also dedicated to private teaching (tuba!) through the Hopkins School District; and leads his own band, the Pembertones, in addition to his quintet. . - (Andrea Canter, Jazz Police)

4th band Century College Big Band!

Friday, October 19 - Saturday, October 20, Pete Whitman’s X-Tet (9 pm, $12)
Friday, 19 October 2007
ImageImageSaxophone maestro Pete Whitman gathers nine of his most talented friends for a monthly Thursday performance at the AQ.  This month, the “little big band” moves in for a weekend of dazzling charts and musical telepathy.  Even with ten members performing, you find yourself pondering where all those perfectly-placed, sonorous pearls are coming from.  When you review the roster of first-call pros on stand, you answer your own question.  Their 2002 release Where’s When? received a 4-star salute from Downbeat.  The all-star cast includes Laura Caviani on piano, Phil Hey on drums, Dave Hagedorn on vibes, a horn section roll call of Greg Keel, Clay Pufahl & Pete Whitman (saxes), Kelly Rossum & Adam Rosmiller (trumpets), and Jeff Rinear (trombone).  Experts in math, Roman numerals & ensembles can figure out the slot to be named later ...

Wednesday, October 17, How Birds Work (9 pm, $5)
Wednesday, 17 October 2007

ImageImageFiery chops, instinctual communal listening skills, sprawling musical vocabulary, dynamics in flight -- that's How Birds Work. On their CD "Live at the Artists' Quarter," HBW go from hard bop explorations to fusion-istic workouts to elegant melodicism on tracks like Coltrane's "Equinox," Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," and Peter Schimke's moving original "Vow." A recent Mpls/St. Paul magazine feature article described the sound as "swinging with lovely aggression -- and never swirling among the musicians for their own benefit, but constantly heading straight toward audience." Dean Granros (guitar), Peter Schimke (keyboards), Chris Bates (bass), Kenny Horst (drums).

Check out this recent video of How Birds Work or this one, both from 8/30/07.
