Friday, July 10 - Saturday, July 11, Debbie Duncan (9 pm, $10).
Thursday, 09 July 2009

ImageA Star Tribune review of the Ordway show “Blues in the Night” said that Debbie strikes “the earthy, gut-bucket truth of the blues.” Debbie also strikes the truth when it comes to jazz, soul, ballads and whatever other style she chooses. Her five CD releases, including I Thought About You (FS Music 2006), are the work of a complete vocalist – one who understands that bravado and vulnerability are equally potent, and often intertwined, forms of expression. She’s recorded with Jimmy McGriff, opened for Al Green (where the crowd went wild) and entranced audiences from St. Paul to Italy.

Check out these videos of Debbie at the AQ:

Thursday, July 9, Bill Carrothers European Trio (9 pm, $10)
Wednesday, 08 July 2009
ImageBill Carrothers was raised in the Twin Cities, lives in the Upper Peninsula and is very popular in Europe. While it may sound like the plot of a Coen brothers movie, this is Bill’s real life (although the Coens may want to consider a treatment). Carrothers has been playing piano professionally for over 20 years, racking up an impressive résumé. ImageHe has performed at top venues and events like the Village Gate (NYC), the Knitting Factory (NYC), New Morning (Paris), and the Montreal Jazz Festival. His sound has earned him gigs with Joe Beck, Curtis Fuller, Eric Kamau Gravatt, Lee Konitz, Matt “Guitar” Murphy and Dewey Redman, to name a few. Billy's CDs as band leader display a sensitive and idiosyncratic style that is entirely absorbing. For this very special performance, Bill brings his European touring group to the AQ: Nic Thys (bass) and Dre Pallemaerts (drums). Their 3-city tour includes stops at the AQ, The Green Mill in Chicago and The Village Vanguard in NYC.

The Atlantis Quartet features Brandon Wozniak on Tenor Saxophone, Zacc Harris on Guitar, Chris Bates on Bass, and Pete Hennig - Drums. ImageAtlantis Quartet formed in October 2006 and has become one of the Twin Cities' premier voices in modern creative jazz. Dwight Hobbes of Pulse of the Twin Cities credits Atlantis Quartet with "strong compositions and insanely serious chops" -Image Jazz ImprovMagazine calls the Atlantis Quartet: "highly skilled musicians who have invested themselves heavily to develop their individual approaches...together, they sound genuinely inspired."
