Friday, June 5 - Saturday, June 6, Eric Kamau Gravatt & Source Code (9 pm, $12).
Friday, 05 June 2009
ImageEric Kamau Gravatt is known around the globe for his incredible drumming work with Weather Report , Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner and many others.  Eric was raised in Philadelphia, and has lived in the Twin Cities for several years.  (His local performances, however, are as rare as his talent.  ImageRoad work with McCoy and other musical ventures keep him off Twin Cities stages for the most part.)  The great Wayne Shorter said, “Eric was the one.  Miles wanted him, but he came to us in Weather Report.”  ImageThe powerful Source Code interprets the works of artists like John Coltrane and Jackie McLean.  In addition to Eric Kamau Gravatt on drums, Source Code reads Mary Louise Knutson (piano), Dave Leigh (trombone), Jim Marentic (sax), and Ron Evaniuk (bass).

Thursday, June 4, Pooch’s Playhouse (9 pm, $5)
Thursday, 04 June 2009
ImagePooch’s Playhouse features Bruce “Pooch” Heine on bass, guitarist Joel Shapira, saxophonist Dave Brittain, pianist Mark Asche and percussionist Dave Schmalenberger. These musicians have a number of interconnections—Shapira and Heine play together in the modern trio, Triplicate; Heine, Asche and Brittain perform together with the Cedar Avenue Big Band; Shapira has played with everyone in one context or another. Notes Shapira, “To me this group was a very natural fit...it felt good from day one and developed rapidly into something special to all members that we want to expand upon in the future...I would describe the music as diversely influenced, adventurous and open-ended, but we are first and foremost a pure jazz group, that is the intention of this band... and we are proud of that fact.”  - Andrea Canter, Jazz Police
