Saturday, February 7, Billy Peterson, Tanner Taylor, Kenny Horst (9 pm, $10)
Friday, 06 February 2009

ImageImageBassist Billy Peterson keeps it moving, touring as a member of the Steve Miller Band, fly fishing in Montana and conducting various confidential and top-secret missions. And that makes this meeting with old pal Kenny Horst (drums) and young piano wiz Tanner Taylor something of an event. Pianist Tanner Taylor moved to the Twin Cities from Jefferson, Iowa, in 2001, and Minnesota jazz fans’ jaws have been dropping ever since.  Image Kenny Horst is the heartbeat of the AQ both on and off the stage and a master of the trap set. Come out for this special night of top-shelf, solid jazz by three of Minnesota's finest practitioners.

Friday, February 6 - Atlantis Quartet (9 pm, $10).
Thursday, 05 February 2009
ImageThe Atlantis Quartet features Brandon Wozniak on Tenor Saxophone, Zacc Harris on Guitar, Chris Bates on Bass, and Pete Hennig - Drums. Atlantis Quartet formed in October 2006 and has become one of the Twin Cities' premier voices in modern creative jazz. Dwight Hobbes of Pulse of the Twin Cities credits Atlantis Quartet with "strong compositions and insanely serious chops" - Jazz ImprovMagazine calls the Atlantis Quartet: "highly skilled musicians who have invested themselves heavily to develop their individual approaches...together, they sound genuinely inspired." Thursday, February 5, How BIrds Work (9pm, $5)
Wednesday, 04 February 2009
ImageImageHow Birds work at 9 pm. This flock of Twin Cities jazz stars consistently mesmerizes its audiences.  Doses of rock and funk can be found in the post-bop explorations, always with a sense of purpose and an intoxicating rhythmic force. Check out their CD Live at the Artists’ Quarter for standout tracks like Coltrane's “Equinox,” Wayne Shorter's “Footprints,” and Peter Schimke's moving original “Vow.”  Better yet, check them out live at the Artists’ Quarter – in person – to really feel How Birds Work.  ImageImageA profile in Mpls/St. Paul magazine, describing guitarist Dean Granros, enthused, “[H]e possesses an undeniable sense of gravitas.  He’s the performer most difficult, even for his bandmates, not to watch.”  Indeed, Dean’s standing among his peers is tall, and all the best players love to perform with him.  The same can be said for each member of this magnificent crew.  City Pages recently had this to say about HBW’s residency at the AQ:  “[M]usic this simultaneously assured and expansive deserves a good home – and How Birds Work has found it.”  Kenny Horst (drums), Peter Schimke (piano), Chris Bates (bass) and Dean Granros (guitar).
