Friday, June 6 - Saturday, June 7, Tanner Taylor Tribute to Oscar Peterson (9 pm, $10)
Friday, 06 June 2008

ImagePianist Tanner Taylor moved to the Twin Cities from Jefferson, Iowa, in 2001, and Minnesota jazz fans’ jaws have been dropping ever since.  Tanner is a young talent who always wows a crowd, whether he’s applying his signature simpatico accompaniment to the work of top vocalists, performing with groups like world beat artists Tickle Fight, backing greats including David “Fathead” Newman and Lew Tabackin, or leading his own trio.  Tanner’s exciting and fluid style is a great match for the book of jazz legend Oscar Peterson, the late Canadian marvel best known for speed, dexterity, and loads of swing.  Peterson, who emerged in the 1940s and remained active until his death in 2007, had the ability to play an incredible volume of notes during any passage without seeming excessive – and always sounding right, tasteful and brilliant.  A true giant of jazz piano interpreted by a rising star.

Check out this video of Tanner performing "Waltz for Debbie" at eh Bobby Peterson Tribute on Feb. 15, 2008 /www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQtDFYm8cN0

Thurrsday, June 5, Peter Schimke Trio (9 pm, $5)
Thursday, 05 June 2008
ImagePeter Schimke is a world calss jazz pianist with plenty of musical ideas and the finely honed skills to express them expertly. We are lucky that he has chosen to live in the Twin Cities. Jazz Police says: "Peter is a player who who isn't afraid to push the music in new directions. When he is comping behind a soloist he is engaged in a subtle dialog, listening and responding with harmonies and rhythms that sometimes represent a suggestion or invitation to the soloist. He is a player who is never on 'autopilot' but is engaged and committed to the music he is participating in creating. No two takes will be the same. Either on piano or Fender Rhodes, Schimke is well worth seeking out." Check out this  video of Peter Schimke from December 13, 2007 www.youtube.com/watch?v=zibugaLtpr0

Wednesday, June 4, Dean Granros Trio (9 pm, $5)
Wednesday, 04 June 2008
ImageGuitarist Dean Granros is a musician of mind-bending skill.  Whether he's composing, putting his own esoteric spin on a Monk tune or redefining a standard, his expansive musical vision, daunting precision and colorful use of harmonics make him a one-of-a-kind artist.  “Granros blends the vocabulary of bebop, acid rock, and delta blues into a delightful and potent cocktail that may leave you shaken and stirred,” said Don Berryman at jazzpolice.com .  From the New York band Curlew in the late 1970s to current projects like How Birds Work, Starry Eyed Lovelies and F*K*G, Dean is one of those guys who the best musicians love to work with, and he inspires each one of them.  Tom Lewis (bass) and Kenny Horst (drums) will be digging in with Dean. Check out this  video clip of the Dean Granros Trio.
