Friday, April 4 - Saturday, April 5, Jim Rotondi (9 pm, $15)

ImageJim Rotondi is one of the most exciting trumpet players in jazz.  Raised in Butte, Montana, Jim took up the trumpet at age 12.  He attended the esteemed jazz studies program at North Texas State University.  If those first jobs out of college are tough to nab, Jim did quite well – recording and touring internationally with the Ray Charles Orchestra.  ImageThis post was followed by a six-year tenure with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and prestigious chairs with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, the Charles Earland Quintet, Toshiko Akiyoshi and others.  Rotondi shares a front line with saxophonist Eric Alexander and trombonist Steve Davis in the group One For All.  Based in NYC, Jim Rotondi has several acclaimed CDs under his own name and is one of jazz's most sought after trumpet players on stage and in the studio. Jim is joined by Kenny Horst (drums), Tom Lewis (bass), Phil Aaron (piano on Friday) & Bill Carrothers (piano on Saturday).  Check out his video sample of Rotondi at the AQ

“Rotondi has the passion and focus to find a place for the music in the new millennium.”  The New Yorker.

Thursday, April 3, Peter Schimke Trio (9 pm, $5)
ImagePeter Schimke is a world calss jazz pianist with plenty of musical ideas and the finely honed skills to express them expertly. We are lucky that he has chosen to live in the Twin Cities. Jazz Police says: "Peter is a player who who isn't afraid to push the music in new directions. When he is comping behind a soloist he is engaged in a subtle dialog, listening and responding with harmonies and rhythms that sometimes represent a suggestion or invitation to the soloist. He is a player who is never on 'autopilot' but is engaged and committed to the music he is participating in creating. No two takes will be the same. Either on piano or Fender Rhodes, Schimke is well worth seeking out." Check out this video of the Peter Schimke Trio from December 13, 2007 www.youtube.com/watch?v=zibugaLtpr0
