Sunday, March 9, Lucia Newell & Joan Griffith (7 pm, $10)
Saturday, 08 March 2008
ImageImageRapturous vocalist Lucia Newell and elegant guitarist Joan Griffith are long-time musical collaborators.  Their 1995 CD Enter You, Enter Love is a warm and engaging journey through Brazilian bossa nova and American jazz standards.  These days, it’s all too rare of an event when this deeply talented duo takes the stage together.  Musical dialogue custom made for an intimate Sunday night.  Lucia and Joan are joined by Gordy Johnson (bass), Clea Galhano (Brazilian recorder) and Gary Gauger (drums).

Friday, March 7 - Saturday, March 8, Jaleel Shaw! (9 pm, $15)
Thursday, 06 March 2008

ImageThis month, alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw releases his 2nd CD as bandleader – Optimism.  This fiery and expressive horn man will be performing many of the new tunes on his trip to the AQ.  Jaleel was among the burning young players in Roy Haynes’ Fountain of Youth Band (who recorded the live disc Whereas at the AQ in 2006).  Jaleel has performed with artists including the Charles Mingus Big Band, Haynes’ group, Roy Hargrove, Arturo Sandoval, and many others.  This Philadelphia native counts Grover Washington, Jr. among his early mentors, and continues the creative and adventurous spirit of influences such as Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and Jackie McLean.  His 2005 CD release Perspective includes his composition “Heavyweight Champion,” a tribute to Coltrane and winner of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award.  Jaleel is joined by Chris Lomheim (piano), Billy Peterson (bass) and Kenny Horst (drums).

Check out Pamela Espeland's MinnPost article on Jaleel at MinnPost. Also read Andrea Cante's preview of the show on Jazz Police.

Thursday, March 6, Twin Cities Hot Club (9 pm, $5)
Wednesday, 05 March 2008

Image“Some 68 years ago the broadcaster Ed Morrow bridged time to introduce all of us to The Hot Club of France with Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Now, at this moment, you can bridge that time and space with the Twin Cities Hot Club. Their passion, scholarship and skilled musicianship take you back to those days at Bricktop’s Cabaret in Paris. Listen and listen again, this is Minnesota calling the spirit of Django and Stephane.” - Leigh Kaman, fThe Jazz Image ©, Minnesota Public Radio.Image

The Twin Cities Hot Club performs gypsy Jazz in the tradition of Django and Stephane played by four of Minnesota's hottest string jazz masters: Robert Bell, Reynold Philipsek, Gary Schulte, and Matt Senjem.

Wednesday, March 5, Dean Granros Trio (9 pm, $5)
Tuesday, 04 March 2008
ImageDean Granros is a guitarist of mind-bending skill.  Whether he's putting his own esoteric spin on a Monk tune or redefining a standard, his expansive musical vision, daunting precision and colorful use of harmonics make him a one-of-a-kind artist.  “Granros blends the vocabulary of bebop, acid rock, and delta blues into a delightful and potent cocktail that may leave you shaken or stirred,” said Don Berryman at jazzpolice.com .  From the New York band Curlew in the late 1970s to current projects like How Birds Work, Starry Eyed Lovelies and F*K*G, Dean is one of those guys who the best musicians love to work with, and he inspires each one of them.  Tom Lewis (bass) and Kenny Horst (drums) will be digging in with Dean. Check out this  video clip of the Dean Granros Trio.
