Friday, June 1 - Sunday, June 3, Lew Tabackin (9 pm Friday and Saturday, 8 pm Sunday, $17)
Friday, 01 June 2007
Lew Tabackin“Without a doubt Lew Tabackin is one of the greatest tenor saxophonists the world has ever heard,” says Saxophone Journal.  Legendary jazz journalist Leonard Feather called Lew “arguably the finest flute player on today’s jazz scene.”  To achieve such praise for a single instrument in jazz is impressive, but Lew transcends impressive.  His credits, dating back to the Sixties, include work with Cab Calloway, Joe Henderson, Clark Terry, George Wein’s Newport All-Star Band, Toshiko Akiyoshi (Mr. Tabackin’s wife) and many more.  Whether performing with other luminaries or leading his own set, Lew’s hard-driving tenor sax is as compelling as it gets, with brilliant use of wide intervals and palpable mood shifts.  His passionate flute playing incorporates exotic, sometimes classical, elements that take you on a beautiful, rewarding, musical journey.  Tabackin consistently expresses the full range of possibilities with his instruments – melodically, rhythmically and dynamically.
