Wednesday, May 9, Peter Schimke Trio (9 pm, $4)
Wednesday, 09 May 2007
Peter SchimkePeter Schinke is a world clsss jazz pianist with plenty of musical ideas and the finely honed skills to express them expertly. We are lucky that he has chosen to live in the Twin Cities. Jazz Police says: "Peter is a player who who isn't afraid to push the music in new directions. When he is comping behind a soloist he is engaged in a subtle dialog, listening and responding with harmonies and rhythms that sometimes represent a suggestion to the soloist. He is a player who is never on 'autopilot' but is engaged and committed to the music he is participating in creating. No two takes will be the same. Either on piano or Fender Rhodes, Schimke is well worth seeking out."

Friday, May 4 - Saturday, May 5, Out to Lunch Quintet (9 pm $10)
Friday, 04 May 2007

ImageOriginally formed for one show in tribute of Eric Dolphy, the ecstatic response to the Out To Lunch Quintet has resulted in return engagements and the CD Live at the Artists’ Quarter.  Eric Dolphy (1928 – 1964) was an innovative giant (alto sax, flute, bass clarinet) known for his unique style, using wide intervals and speech-like effects.  Mingus and Coltrane were just a few legends who considered Dolphy to be a master.  His many recordings as a sideman included Mingus albums, Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz and Coltrane's Live at the Village Vanguard (1961).  In 1964, Dolphy recorded Out To Lunch, an avant-garde masterpiece that has influenced generations and remains a cornerstone of the modern jazz movement.  Dolphy died in Berlin at age 36 of undiagnosed diabetes.  The five Twin Cities musicians reprising Dolphy’s catalog are Twin Cities greats David Milne (horns), Dave Hagedorn (vibes), Phil Hey (drums), Tom Lewis (bass) and Kelly Rossum (trumpet).  www.otlq.com
