Sunday, Deccember 9, Happy Apple (8 pm, $12)
Saturday, 08 December 2007
ImageImage“They succeed because they’ve created a genuinely new sound that combines elements of free jazz, alt-rock, compositional ingenuity, and true improv,” says J. Dennis of Monument, CO, in a “Customer Review” of Happy Apple’s CD Youth Oriented on amazon.com.  Sure, we could quote the New York Times or DownBeat for gushing reviews of Happy Apple (and we have), but The People have spoken (and that’s important).  With Mike Lewis on sax, Erik Fratzke on bass and Dave King on drums, the sounds are packed with frenetic creativity and brain-tickling dynamics that energize the intrinsically melodic core.   Mr. Eliot, a “Customer Reviewer” from Hopkins, MN, counsels amazon.com readers:  “Seriously, if you get a chance, see them live.”

Thursday, December 6, Gary Berg Quartet (9 pm, $5)
Wednesday, 05 December 2007

ImageGary Berg is well known to AQ fans as the master of the saxes in the Tuesday Night Band. A soulful and hard bopping horn man, Gary is also known to take a moving turn on the chromatic harmonica.  Mr. Berg can also be heard playing on a slew of current local recordings including Pieces of Dreams by Carole Maritn, This is Organ Night by Billy Holloman, Blanket of Blue by Paula Lammers, Deja Vu by Francine Roche, and The Highest Mountain by George Avaloz.   Jonathan Francis of The MAC Weekly states:"... Gary Bergs solos are masterpieces of wit and charm, bop-driven and infused with soul ... Charlie Parker meets old school rhythm-and-blues meets 60's hard bop." Come hear Gary as he leads his quartet through the musical landscape of bebop, hard bop, and soul-jazz.  It’s always a rewarding ride when Gary takes the wheel and drives that jazz bus through his own headlining gigs. Check out this viceo of Gary .

Wednesday, December 5, Dean Granros Trio (9 pm, $5)
Tuesday, 04 December 2007
ImageDean Granros is a guitarist of mind-bending skill.  Whether he's putting his own esoteric spin on a Monk tune or redefining a standard, his expansive musical vision, daunting precision and colorful use of harmonics make him a one-of-a-kind artist.  “Granros blends the vocabulary of bebop, acid rock, and delta blues into a delightful and potent cocktail that may leave you shaken or stirred,” said Don Berryman at jazzpolice.com .  From the New York band Curlew in the late 1970s to current projects like How Birds Work, Starry Eyed Lovelies and F*K*G, Dean is one of those guys who the best musicians love to work with, and he inspires each one of them.  Tom Lewis (bass) and Kenny Horst (drums) will be digging in with Dean. Check out this  video clip of the Dean Granros Trio.
