Friday, February 29 - Saturday, March 1, Irv Williams CD Release (9 pm, $10)
Thursday, 28 February 2008

Image"Play the age card.”  Irv Williams – providing marketing advice for sales of his CDs. Perhaps that's why he named his latest Finality.  The truth is, no marketing gimmicks are required to sell tenor saxophonist Irv Williams’ CDs. Irv continues to release new material with melodic splendor and impeccable tone in his 88th year. His previous, Duo with Peter Schimke, was listed #1 in Mpls/St. Paul Magazine’s Top Ten local releases for 2006.  Image  His prior two CDs, That’s All? (2004) and Dedicated to You (2005), also earned critical raves, extensive radio play, and kudos from Irv’s many fans. Irv arrived in St. Paul with the Navy band in 1942, and he’s been a Twin Cities jazz icon ever since.88 and playing great - Irv Williams continues to delight.

“..either the coolest old guy or the oldest cool guy in St. Paul.” –City Pages

Thursday, February 28, Pete Whitman’s X-Tet (9 pm, $7)
Wednesday, 27 February 2008
ImageSaxophone maestro Pete Whitman gathers nine of his most talented friends for a monthly Thursday performance at the AQ.  This month, the “little big band” moves in for a weekend of dazzling charts and musical telepathy.  ImageEven with ten members performing, you find yourself pondering where all those perfectly-placed, sonorous pearls are coming from.  When you review the roster of first-call pros on stand, you answer your own question.  Their 2002 release Where’s When? received a 4-star salute from Downbeat.  The all-star cast includes Laura Caviani on piano, Phil Hey on drums,Gordy Johnson on bass, Dave Hagedorn on vibes, a horn section roll call of Dave Karr, Dave Milne & Pete Whitman (saxes), Dave Jensen & Kelly Rossum (trumpets), and Jeff Rinear (trombone).

Wednesday, February 27 - Lucia Newell Quartet (9 pm, $5)
Tuesday, 26 February 2008
ImageJazz vocalist Lucia Newell leads her top-notch quartet presenting “The A, B, C’s of Jazz” . An AQ favorite, Lucia Newell is a vocalist of extraordinary ability and musical depth, truly a jazz musician. She is joined by Phil Aaron on piano, Adam Linz on bass and Kenny Horst on drums. Check out this video clip.Image

“As reader or singer, Lucia Newell is a magnificent interpreter who communicates through intonation, phrasing, faultless diction (in two languages) and a husky contralto... Lucia turns her heart inside out, filling the air with the emptiness and despair the lyrics demand.” - Andrea Canter, Jazz Police
