Hammond B-3 organ lovers have been flocking to the AQ on Tuesday nights for over a decade to get a soulful dose of funky jazz. The Tuesday Night Band features "Downtown" Bill Brown (Hammond B-3), Billy Franze (guitar), and Kenny Horst (drums) + guests! Nothing but a party every Tuesday night. Check out these videos:, Two tunes from the TNB or TNB "Shotgun" There's no stopping the groove.
February special guest is Shá Cage. One of the most dynamic spoken word artists on the scene, and a noted actress, Shá Cage has been appropriately called 'The Priestess of the Word.' A striking mix of spoken word and theatre, her performances have left audiences moved. Her work unabashedly questions inequality, class, and gender issues and is rooted in the rhythms of her native Natchez, Mississippi. Her Film credits include: Midnight, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Joe Somebody, Factotum, and Cry About a Nickel. Visit www.myspace.com/shacage for samples of her work.
February's Side event: The "Naughty Or Nice Haiku Battle" February is the time of love - and nookie. So Our infamous dirty haiku battle comes back with a twist. Instead of being just plain filthy, poets now have a choice to perform haiku that are sweet, mushy and romantic - or sexy, kinky and hot. Which will win?
The Slam competition is open to anyone (18+) three rounds of poetic battle and good times. Sign up between 7 and 8 pm.
New York-based drummer Ari Hoenig and pianist Jean-Michel Pilc are artists frequently referenced in conversations on "where is jazz headed?" With their sweeping musical imaginations and precise-yet-atmospheric chops, these are young titans leading contemporary jazz to a very stimulating location. Hoenig's recently re leased CD Inversations (Dreyfus Jazz), with Pilc at the piano, is an entirely engaging collection of mostly original gems. Hoenig, raised in jazz-rich Philadelphia, has an intense, melodic style that led JazzTimes to call him one of the most "musical drummers in jazz." Pilc (raised in Paris) was described in the Chicago Tribune as "among the most accomplished and stylistically daring jazz pianists working today." Truly a "must see" pair of stars. Between them, Hoenig and Pilc have worked with Pat Martino, Joshua Redman, Roy Haynes and many more!
