Sunday August 5, Memorial for Don Ringnalda (4 pm)

ImageOne of the AQ’s most ardent fans, Don Ringnalda passed away in late June at age 62. The St. Thomas English Professor had been battling throat cancer. Don was often seated at the bar, one of the AQ “regulars.” A jazz fan by night, Don taught at St. Thomas by day. He turned his Viet Nam experience into an acclaimed book, Fighting and Writing the Vietnam War, "probably the number one work that will give you a handle on this body of work, including literature, film and nonfiction,” said his Department Chair, Andrew Scheiber. "Don's basic hypothesis is this: The very way that we make sense of history as Americans keeps us from seeing the world as it actually is and leads us into political and moral disasters." The AQ will celebrate Don’s life and love of jazz at this Sunday afternoon event.

Friday, August 3 - Saturday, August 4, Carole Martin (9 pm, $10)
ImageDescribing the sublime Ms. Martin in a Star Tribune profile, Michael Anthony set this scene:  “Playing to a packed house and dressed in an elegant velvet pantsuit with a gold lamé vest, she was doing tunes from her latest CD Songs From My Heart.  Among them was a sexy, hard-swinging 'I Concentrate on You' propelled by her rich, resonant alto and unerring rhythmic sense.”  Songs From My Heart was released in late 2005, one year following her 2004 comeback CD Pieces of Dreams (her first recording since the late 1960s and another critics' favorite).  Her touchingly honest and emotional vocals, and undeniable charisma, hit home with multiple generations.  Torch songs that smolder.

Thursday, August 2, Phil Hey Quartet (9 pm, $4)
ImageImage Thursday, July 26, Phil Hey Quartet (9 pm, $4) The Phil Hey Quartet features Dave Hagedorn on vibes, Phil Aaron on piano, Tom Lewis on bass and Phil on drums and has been an Artists' Quarter favorite for the past 6 years. No surprise really. This is a no-nonsense, uncompromising band of local jazz greats regularly performing the tunes of Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Hutcherson, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter and others. Over the years they have attracted a loyal following of hardcore jazz fans and students who show up on the monthly Thursday night when they perform.  Check out this video clip of the PHQ from earlier this year .
