Live Jazz in St Paul

“They succeed because they’ve created a genuinely new sound that combines elements of free jazz, alt-rock, compositional ingenuity, and true improv,” says J. Dennis of Monument, CO, in a “Customer Review” of Happy Apple’s CD Youth Oriented on amazon.com. Sure, we could quote the New York Times or DownBeat for gushing reviews of Happy Apple (and we have), but The People have spoken (and that’s important). With Mike Lewis on sax, Erik Fratzke on bass and Dave King on drums, the sounds are packed with frenetic creativity and brain-tickling dynamics that energize the intrinsically melodic core. Mr. Eliot, a “Customer Reviewer” from Hopkins, MN, counsels amazon.com readers: “Seriously, if you get a chance, see them live.”

Gary Berg is well known to AQ fans as the master of the saxes in the Tuesday Night Band. A soulful and hard bopping horn man, Gary is also known to take a moving turn on the chromatic harmonica. Mr. Berg can also be heard playing on a slew of current local recordings including Pieces of Dreams by Carole Maritn, This is Organ Night by Billy Holloman, Blanket of Blue by Paula Lammers, Deja Vu by Francine Roche, and The Highest Mountain by George Avaloz. Jonathan Francis of The MAC Weekly states:"... Gary Bergs solos are masterpieces of wit and charm, bop-driven and infused with soul ... Charlie Parker meets old school rhythm-and-blues meets 60's hard bop." Come hear Gary as he leads his quartet through the musical landscape of bebop, hard bop, and soul-jazz. It’s always a rewarding ride when Gary takes the wheel and drives that jazz bus through his own headlining gigs. Check out this viceo of Gary .

W. BAZ: Armed with a style once aptly described as "confessional swagger," J.W. Baz tackles everything from searing social commentary to gritty introspection with a generous spoonful of intensity and a dash of dry wit. In his first year on the national poetry scene, J.W. Baz was a finalist at the Individual World Poetry Slam, won the 2006 Rustbelt Regional Slam, and finished in the Top Ten at the 2006 National Poetry Slam as a member of Team Chicago. All things considered, he's doing pretty well for a guy who failed Creative Writing in high school.December's Side event: The "I Hate The Holidays Haiku Battle" Anyone can compete - Bring at least 10 haiku
