Wednesday, November 7, Triplicate (9 pm, $5)
ImageImageTriplicate is Joel Shapira on electric guitars, Bruce "Pooch" Heine on acoustic and electric basses and David Stanoch on trapset. Triplicate is an improvisational jazz trio, formed in 1996, that blends an eclectic variety of musical influences and experiences together to produce a personal repertoire of music defined by their collective group sound. Triplicate became a band more by accident than design. The trio bonded through informal jam sessions and a desire to stretch, burn, and play melodically. As the trio discovered its musical chemistry a repertoire quickly began to form and the group forged ahead with a concept that they would perform as a true band in every sense--developing their original and adapted music together and always performing as a core unit. This is a concept seen less often, in this day and age, to which the members of Triplicate have dedicated themselves for almost a decade.

The catch is – you can’t use any “real” words. Make up a language, speak gibberish, babble, hum, moan and wail, gargle, or just perform a poem with no noise at all. Make whatever sounds you want, they just can’t be any words found in ANY dictionary.

Friday, November 2, Debbie Duncan and the Tuesday Night Band

ImageDebbie Duncan gets to the soul of the matter in every vocal performance. She is a jazz singer, to be sure, but there is no mistaking the deep well of inspiration from Gospel, folk, blues, R&B and classical. Her five CD releases, including I Thought About You (FS Music 2006), are the work of a complete vocalist – one who understands that bravado and vulnerability are equally potent, and often intertwined, forms of expression. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, ImageDebbie has been one of the most revered figures in the vibrant Twin Cities music scene for over two decades. The Minneapolis Star Tribune put it this way: “Once you hear Debbie Duncan, you probably won't think of any other singer; she's that commanding.”.  Backing Debbie, the Tuesday Night Band features "Downtown" Bill Brown (Hammond B-3), Billy Franze (guitar), Gary Berg (sax) and Kenny Horst (drums).  Hammond B-3 organ lovers have been flocking to the AQ on Tuesday nights for over a decade to get a soulful dose of funky jazz, Those who don't venture out on week nights have a chance to hear this great band perform with Minnesota's first lady of song.
