Friday, March 28 - Saturday, March 29, Phil Hey Quartet (9 pm, $10)

ImageA City Pages review of the PHQ’s CD Subduction:  Live at the Artists’ Quarter proclaimed, “Phil Hey's first CD as a bandleader reflects the creative passion, refined taste, and ensemble-oriented empathy that have, over the past two decades, made Hey the area's best jazz drummer.”

ImageThe Phil Hey Quartet features Dave Hagedorn on vibes, Phil Aaron on piano, Tom Lewis on bass and Phil on drums and has been an Artists' Quarter favorite for the past 6 years. No surprise really. This is a no-nonsense, uncompromising band of local jazz greats regularly performing the tunes of Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Hutcherson, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter and others.   ImageOver the years they have attracted a loyal following of hardcore jazz fans and students who show up on the monthly Thursday night when they perform.  Image With this weekend gig PHQ fans will get two nights of great modern jazz. Check out this video of the PHQ doing Don Cherry's "Mopti", this video of the PHQ playing "Aspire" or this one of the PHQ performing "I'm Old Fashioned" .

ImageSaxophone maestro Pete Whitman gathers nine of his most talented friends for a monthly Thursday performance at the AQ.  This month, the “little big band” digs in with dazzling charts and musical telepathy.  ImageEven with ten members performing, you find yourself pondering where all those perfectly-placed, sonorous pearls are coming from.  When you review the roster of first-call pros on stand, you answer your own question.  Their 2002 release Where’s When? received a 4-star salute from Downbeat.  The all-star cast includes Laura Caviani on piano, Phil Hey on drums,Gordy Johnson on bass, Dave Hagedorn on vibes, a horn section roll call of Dave Karr, Dave Milne & Pete Whitman (saxes), Dave Jensen & Kelly Rossum (trumpets), and Jeff Rinear (trombone).
