Wednesday, July 22, Tesfa Quintet (7 pm), Tanner Taylor Trio (9 pm, $5) |
|
An early set at 7 p.m. features "The Tesfa Quintet" with Dejen Tesfagiorgis on Saxophones, Adam Meckler on Trumpet, Jesse Mueller on Piano, Adam Tucker on Bass, and Jaky Nyberg on Drums. Pianist Tanner Taylor moved to the Twin Cities from Jefferson, Iowa, in 2001, and Minnesota jazz fans’ jaws have been dropping ever since. Tanner is a young talent who always wows a crowd, whether he’s applying his signature simpatico accompaniment to the work of top vocalists, performing with groups like world beat artists Tickle Fight, backing greats including David “Fathead” Newman and Lew Tabackin, or leading his own trio.

Thursday, July 23, Dave Karr Quartet (9 pm, $5) |
For over 50 years, saxophonist/flutist/clarinetist/composer Dave Karr has been performing with many of the best national and Twin Cities jazz artists. The NYC native grew up seeing the great jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and he got the bug. Karr moved to the Twin Cities in his twenties, and has long established himself as one of the best-loved characters in the jazz scene. Whether he’s in the orchestra of a touring Broadway hit, providing flourishes to the shows of top Twin Cities singers, leading his Gerry Mulligan tribute band on baritone sax or fronting his own quartet, Karr is a standout. “[Dave's] fluid style is both exciting and elegant,” JazzPolice.com. Friday, July 24 - Saturday, July 25, Illicit Sextet Reunion (9 pm, $12). |
|
It’s been more than 15 years since the release of the Illicit Sextet’s debut CD, Chapter One [click here to read liner notes and reviews ], and after an absence of almost as many years, they return. Triumphantly, no doubt. Referred to as “the Cadillac of local jazz” by critic Jim Meyer, the group covered a lot of musical terrain in their day. Archive photo All of the members wrote original material, and they were one of the few groups forgoing the standards at that time. Whether getting soulful, slamming some hard bop, or improvising their way to redemption, the Illicit Sextet provided a thrill that was nothing to be ashamed of. Well, the thrill is back. Steve Kenny (trumpet), Paul Harper (sax), David Roos (guitar), Chris Lomheim (piano), Tom Pieper (bass) and Nathan Norman (drums). |
