Coming to the AQ
Thursday, February 9, Dave Brattain, Dave Haagedorn, Billy Peterson & Kenny Horst (9pm, $5)

Saxophinist Dave Brattain is a 20-year veteran of the Cedar Avenue Big Band and Vanguard Variety Ensemble, has toured the U.S. with Troupe America (1940s Radio Hour), and has been featured with pianist Ben Sidran. Locally, he’s played with the Paul Renz Quintet and JazzMN Big Band, as well as his own quartet. Currently Brattain is on the faculty of Wayzata High School.

ImageVibraphone master Dave Hagedorn is an Artist in Residence in the Music Department at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, where he teaches percussion, jazz studies and world music. . He has performed in academic settings with everyone from Gil Evans to Happy Apple. Equally impressive, however, are Hagedorn's accomplishments outside the classroom. He has toured nationally with George Russell, playing several stops on the Kool Jazz Festival circuit, and appeared on Russell's So What (Blue Note Records) and Grammy-nominated The African Game. Around the Twin Cities, Hagedorn has appeared on recordings by the likes of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Debbie Duncan, and regularly performs with groups including Source Code with Eric Kamau Gravatt, Apex, Low Blows, Pete Whitman's X-Tet, and JazzMN.

ImageA bass player with few peers, Billy Peterson’s career résumé ranges from swingin’ jazz (Ben Sidran) to avant-garde leaning adventurism (Hope Street MN with Tony Hymas and Eric Kamau Gravatt) to folk-rock and acoustic (Bob Dylan, Leo Kottke) to arena rock (Steve Miller Band).  Even if his sole accomplishment was hangin’ with the cats, he’d still be a persona of mythical proportions.  Image

One of the area's most popular drummers, Kenny Horst is truly a self-made musician. he has been playing jazz gigs in this territory for many years. He has played with Jimmy McGriff, Benny Golson, Lew Tabackin, Eric Alexander, Mose Allison, etc.  and the Edwin Hawkins Singers. He has also done some road work with the Harlem Review, worked a brief tour with Al Hirt, and spent three years teaming up locally with keyboardist Bobby Lyle. Since 1995 Kenny has been running the Artists Quarter jand keeping the torch burning.

Friday, February 10 - Saturday, February 11, Bobby Peterson Memorial Piano Showcase (9pm, $12)

"He was a supreme accompanist and improviser. He was really just a stunning pianist." - Leigh Kamman

ImagePianist Bobby Peterson was not only a legendary figure in Twin Cities jazz, he was a mentor to many and is missed as much for his personal warmth as his incredible talent.  Paying tribute to Bobby (February 16, 1950 – July 8, 2002) are some of the musicians who were touched by his genius in this sixth annual edition of the showcase.  Bobby’s powerhouse, swinging style and crowd-thrilling improvisations earned him a long-term engagement with the Buddy Rich Orchestra starting at age 21.  After returning to the Twin Cities, he was a regular performer at the AQ. Pianists showing their respect (and incredible chops of their own) include Bryan Nichols, Laura Caviani, Bill Carrothers, Chris Lomheim, and Peter Schimke
