Wednesday, September 15, Tefsa Jam (7 pm), Chris Lomheim Trio Tribute to Bill Evans (9pm, $5) |
Bill Evans Pianist and composer Bill Evans (1929 -1980), became well known to the jazz world in the 1950s as pianist for the Miles Davis Sextet. He left Davis to pursue his own music, bu t returned to make essential contributions to the Davis classic Kind of Blue. Evans formed a trio in 1959 with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. The interplay that caught the imagination of jazz audiences remained a hallmark throughout Evans’ career, which saw him in trios with other top names including Philly Joe Jones, Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette and many more. Evans recorded more than fifty albums as leader. His notable collaborations included recordings with such artists as Cannonball Adderley, Tony Bennett, Toots Thielemans, Jim Hall and Stan Getz. Evans received five Grammy awards as well as a posthumously awarded Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award following his death. September 15th marks the 30th year since his passing. The tribute will feature pianist Chris Lomheim with Chris Bates on bass and Jay Epstein on drums. Its going to be a very exciting and beautiful night of Evans Originals and a couple standards that Bill made his own with his trademark arrangements. One of the most sensitive and expressive pianists in town, Chris Lomheim was a founding member of The Illicit Sextet. His own trio gigs (including the recording The Bridge) demonstrate a monster imagination and talented intensity that make him one of a kind.
A free opening set at 7 p.m. features the Tesfa Combo and an open jam session. The Tesfa Combo features Dejen Tesfagiorgis on Saxophones, Steve Kenny on Trumpet, David Feily on Guitar/Trumpet, Jesse Mueller on Piano, Adam Tucker on Bass, and Aaron Rupar/Scorry Horey on Drums. Thuesday, September 16, Jon Pemberton Quintet (9pm, $5) |
Jon Pemberton enjoys a busy career as a leading jazz trumpeter, pianist and composer in the Twin Cities. Upon graduating with a degree in music performance in 1983, Pemberton began a teaching career that lasts to this day, landing his first job as brass instructor at Schmitt Music in Minnetonka. During these years, he also studied jazz trumpet with Twin Cities trumpet legend, Billy Shiell. Subsequently, he began a performing career which showcased his versatility in a variety of musical settings. Those early years included stints with the ska band, SKATET, as well as the exciting free jazz orchestra, IMP ORK. During this time, Pemberton was also heavily influenced by the soulful sounds of legendary trumpeter Lee Morgan. In recent years, he formed a quintet to honor his trumpet hero. Frequently heard at the Artist's Quarter, the band plays all the classics from Lee's briliant Blue Note years.
