Coming to the AQ
|
Wednesday, May 16, Steve Kenny & the Bastids (7pm, free) Graydon Peterson Quartet (9pm, $5) |
|
A free opening performance at 7:00pm by “Steve Kenny and the Bastids”, featuring Mr. Kenny on Trumpet with Jesse Mueller on Piano, Aaron Rupar on Drums, and Adam Tucker on Bass along with some very interesting weekly special guests. Part jam session, part stand-up comedy, and part game show, the Bastids are always a rousing warm up to the evening’s fesivities. Graydon Peterson is one of the backbones of the jazz scene in the Twin Cities. Known as a guy who excels at many styles, Graydon has played with the Twin Cities’ top jazz singers and modern jazz groups, and has toured around the United States. He’s a top-call player who up until now, has been content hanging out in the shadows. Well, Graydon grabbed the pen and paper and what emerged were weird time signatures, beautiful melodies and hard grooves. Graydon’s tunes evoke a wide variety of emotions and energies, stretching what we know as “modern jazz” to it’s limit. The Quartet is rounded out by Adam Meckler on trumpet, Vincent Rose on guitar and Adrian Suarez on drums. Taco night: V-Lo's tasty $2 tacos. |

Thursday, May 17, Snowblind (9pm, $5) |
Formed in 2005, Snowblind is one of the finest collections of young and inspired talent on the Twin Cities jazz scene. Each group member possesses extensive musical training and professional accolades, but together they chase the communal ideal of the jazz ensemble: a group in which all members are equal and pursue common musical goals through relentless rehearsal. Music in the tradition of jazz masters such as Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Art Blakey serve as a foundation for the group. Ventures into Afro-Cuban and groove-oriented material further augment this horn-fueled jazz group’s sound. Snowblind features Scott Agster (trombone), Reid Kennedy (drums), Graydon Peterson (bass), Adam Rosmiller (trumpet) and Shilad Sen (sax). Check out these videos: |

Friday, May 18, Debbie Duncan (9pm, $10) |
|
"She loves Ella Fitzgerald - her clear tone, her skittering scat - and she pays America's jazz and pop classics with the same kind of loving attention as her idol. But once you hear Debbie Duncan, you probably won't think of any other singer - She's that commanding." - Star Tribune
A Star Tribune review of the Ordway show “Blues in the Night” said that Debbie strikes “the earthy, gut-bucket truth of the blues.” Debbie also strikes the truth when it comes to jazz, soul, ballads and whatever other style she chooses. Her five CD releases, including I Thought About You (FS Music 2006), are the work of a complete vocalist – one who understands that bravado and vulnerability are equally potent, and often intertwined, forms of expression. She’s recorded with Jimmy McGriff, opened for Al Green (where the crowd went wild) and entranced audiences from St. Paul to Italy. We are delighted to have her at the AQ. |
